I hadn’t been here very long before I started to feel a certain kind of connection with the objects in the room. Whenever I went in there and sat down, a strange sense of calm would wash over me. As my period of employment has worn on, it’s got to the stage now where I feel compelled to look in on them at least once a day, otherwise I start to feel uneasy. There’s one in particular, over in the corner, that I’ve become especially attached to. It looks like a gift. I know we’re not supposed to touch the objects, but I’ve a feeling you people know everything anyway, so it won’t matter if I tell you that I like to rub the end of its pink belt-tie. In the last few days, I’ve felt that my stress levels have been on the rise, perhaps due to the change in working conditions you mentioned. Anyway, this has now led to me going in and checking up on the objects at least once an hour. Mostly, I just pop my head round the door, have a quick look and make sure everything’s all right. But the day before yesterday you removed the very object to which I feel most attached, the one with the pink belt-tie around its middle, the Gift, and since then I’ve been experiencing palpitations, a tingling in my hands and feet, a sense of derealisation, and a feeling of impending disaster.
